I purchased this book because I could not bear to return my borrowed copy to the local library. Written by one of the pre-eminent authorities on Vermeer, this book explains Vermeer's work by focusing on a number of key paintings. Wheelock touches on historical context, composition, and possible use of camera obscura He explains how x-ray radiography gives us insights into what Vermeer was thinking as he painted and how he achieved his brilliant light and color effects The accompanying color plates are excellent. This is a book for those who love to paint as well as those who love Vermeer's paintings..
